The legend of the Phoenix inspired this painting.
The idea of rebirth and constant regeneration is particularly interesting in relation to forests. It is known that many forests and their inhabitants remain healthy by naturally occurring 'wildfires' that stimulate ecological regeneration in a number of ways. When wildfires are deliberately suppressed by humans the resulting fires, when they do occur, can often be devastating and catastrophic for both humans, animals, the forest itself and the wider environment.
